Consumers’ Kansei Needs Clustering Method for Product Emotional Design Based on Numerical Design Structure Matrix and Genetic Algorithms

    Get PDF
Consumers’ Kansei needs reflect their perception about a product and always consist of a large number of adjectives. Reducing the dimension complexity of these needs to extract primary words not only enables the target product to be explicitly positioned, but also provides a convenient design basis for designers engaging in design work. Accordingly, this study employs a numerical design structure matrix (NDSM) by parameterizing a conventional DSM and integrating genetic algorithms to find optimum Kansei clusters. A four-point scale method is applied to assign link weights of every two Kansei adjectives as values of cells when constructing an NDSM. Genetic algorithms are used to cluster the Kansei NDSM and find optimum clusters. Furthermore, the process of the proposed method is presented. The details of the proposed approach are illustrated using an example of electronic scooter for Kansei needs clustering. The case study reveals that the proposed method is promising for clustering Kansei needs adjectives in product emotional design

Parametric Human Body Model for Digital Apparel Design

With the advance in 3D body scanning technology, it opens opportunities for virtual try-on and automatic made-to-measure in apparel products domain. This paper proposed a novel feature-based parametric method of human body shape from the cloud points of 3D body scanner [TC]2. Firstly, we improved the skeleton construction through adding and adjusting the position of joints. Secondly, automatic extraction approach of semantic feature cross-sections is developed based on the hierarchy. According to the unique distribution of cloud points of each cross-section of each body part, the extraction method of key points on the cross-section is described. Thirdly, we presented an interpolation approach of key points which fit cardinal spline to cross-section for each body part, in which tension parameter is used to represent the simple deformation of body shape. Finally, a connection approach of body part is proposed by sharing a boundary curve. The proposed method has been tested with our virtual human model (VHM) system which is robust and easier to use. The process generally requires about five minutes for generating a full body model that represents the body shape captured by 3D body scanner. The model can be imported in a CAD environment for application to a wide variety of ergonomic analyses

Color Image Evaluation for Small Space Based on FA and GEP

Aiming at the problem that color image is difficult to quantify, this paper proposes an evaluation method of color image for small space based on factor analysis (FA) and gene expression programming (GEP) and constructs a correlation model between color image factors and comprehensive color image. The basic color samples of small space and color images are evaluated by semantic differential method (SD method), color image factors are selected via dimension reduction in FA, factor score function is established, and by combining the entropy weight method to determine each factor weights then the comprehensive color image score is calculated finally. The best fitting function between color image factors and comprehensive color image is obtained by GEP algorithm, which can predict the users’ color image values. A color image evaluation system for small space is developed based on this model. The color evaluation of a control room on AC frequency conversion rig is taken as an example, verifying the effectiveness of the proposed method. It also can assist the designers in other color designs and provide a fast evaluation tool for testing users’ color image

Double Push Strategy of Knowledge for Product Design Based on Complex Network Theory

    No full text
Reasonable application of design knowledge can help improve the efficiency and quality of product design. Based on complex network theory, this study proposes a double push strategy of knowledge for product design. The proposal introduces the concept of attribute similarity and triangular fuzzy number and uses the theory and method of complex network to build the knowledge network model for product design that contains creative knowledge subnetwork and engineering knowledge subnetwork. This paper is to understand the structure and dynamics of the knowledge network model and to identify and predict knowledge nodes and knowledge groups strongly related to design intent in view of the scale-free network topology analysis theory. We develop a double push strategy of product design knowledge to implement the effective auxiliary function for product design process. Finally, a design case of antalgic pump is presented to demonstrate the practicability and validity of the strategy

A high speed detection platform based on surface-enhanced Raman scattering for monitoring antibiotic-induced chemical changes in bacteria cell wall.

Rapid and accurate diagnosis for pathogens and their antibiotic susceptibility is critical for controlling bacterial infections. Conventional methods for determining bacterium's sensitivity to antibiotic depend mostly on measuring the change of microbial proliferation in response to the drug. Such "biological assay" inevitably takes time, ranging from days for fast-growing bacteria to weeks for slow-growers. Here, a novel tool has been developed to detect the "chemical features" of bacterial cell wall that enables rapid identification of drug resistant bacteria within hours. The surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique based on our newly developed SERS-active substrate was applied to assess the fine structures of the bacterial cell wall. The SERS profiles recorded by such a platform are sensitive and stable, that could readily reflect different bacterial cell walls found in Gram-positive, Gram-negative, or mycobacteria groups. Moreover, characteristic changes in SERS profile were noticed in the drug-sensitive bacteria at the early period (i.e., approximately 1 hr) of antibiotic exposure, which could be used to differentiate them from the drug-resistant ones. The SERS-based diagnosis could be applied to a single bacterium. The high-speed SERS detection represents a novel approach for microbial diagnostics. The single-bacterium detection capability of SERS makes possible analyses directly on clinical specimen instead of pure cultured bacteria
